When you get the engine out go through the top end and heads. Unless it had a catch can on it it will be pretty gacked up. You can upgrade the valves and springs and clean things up. Also a billet servo and shift kit in the 60E.

RE: The Flaming Marshmallow Vortec evolution thread
I took it for a long drive tonight, and got the transmission to do what Kris said it did with him. Seems like a simple case of a worn 3-4 piston allowing the 3-4 clutch pack to slip. It's just starting to fail, so if I don't let it slip enough to eat up the clutches, I should be able to use it for LE9.
When it comes out, it will get a rebuild that includes the servo upgrade.

The engine runs great, so maybe just a clean and some fresh seals for good measure. I can see myself pulling the pan and checking clearances. I'd hesitate to pull the heads, because a head gasket set is a couple hundred bucks if you replace the bolts as recommended.

I've been doing some thinking and searching, because the trans slip coinsides with brake warning indicator blinking on, and with the speedometer jumping. I may just have a bad ground, or contaminated connector. Hmmm.

Something with the ABS maybe. Where exactly does the speedo read from?

One interesting code has to do with the brake switch. I'll be investigating that.
Outer codes indicate missing, and erratic wheel speed signals.

Check ABS wheel speed sensors...you can do an easy check yourself with a regular multimeter. I can't remember how many ohms it's supposed to read if good vs bad, but can goggle & find it

Also, clean all your grounds good & even replace ground clamp onto battery (just because it visually looks good, does not mean it is...from experience).

RE: The Flaming Marshmallow Vortec evolution thread
My research so far has led me to believe that the brake indicators are either a faulty ground, or a bad control unit. Both are easily fixed. I'm leaning toward the ground problem, because it is intermittent. It seems worse on rough pavement.

I am hopeful that if I find a bad connection and fix it, that the corresponding speedo drop, and popping out of gear will be solved at the same time.

It is showing pretty much every ABS code there is, so not likely the actual wheel sensors, etc. It has to be a main ground, connector, or broken solder joint on the ECBM.

Thanks for the link, BTW. Thumbup

If I can eliminate the ABS problems, and I still get the trans slip, then I know it is the clutches. But at this point, I doubt it. I sure am glad, however, that I have a complete truck that I can drive around and diagnose. The only downside is that I kind of like it. It is very comfy. P

Can the ABS be disabled?

On my car(VW), I can disable the traction control via a switch to troubleshoot a few things from time to time. The indicator will come on with a MAF error, brake pad sensor trip(along with a second dummy light), loss of traction(a lot lately), and a few other issues will trigger it. Once this light is triggered ABS is disabled.
