81 CJ5 Repair

RE: 81 CJ5 Repair
Last Friday I started the Jeep and it started smoking bad again but the tick tack wasn't very bad at all. I walked around to the passenger side of the Jeep and oil was spraying and drippin out of the right side exhaust pipe. This is a beach! I've rebuilt engines and this has never happened before. It could be the valves but I suspect it is my rebuild Job. The dots were up and all the rings weren't aligned. I reamed the cylinders and honed them. There was scarring on the cylinder walls but not bad. I bought cast rings and they were standard size. I did replace the valve stem seals.
On a side note Anyone want a tired and poorly rebuilt engine?Laughing

Edit- yesterday I pulled the header and found that the cylinders 2 and 4 are leaking oil badly on the right bank. Give me a year or so and I can get the funds to fix the problem or I could buy that M38A1 I've been eyeing.Wink1

More Pictures of the Dana 30 disaster. And a crusty AMC 360 I picked up.

The heads were just like the valley of the engine. Probably going for a rebuild. You can't be optimistic and own a Jeep......

RE: 81 CJ5 Repair
Another engine update. Heads off and the usual carbon build up. Camshaft is worn and a few lobes are almost rounded. Cylinder wall 3 is slightly scored but the rest are nice and cleanish. The pistons don't move around in the cylinders so that was a relief. Called a few engine shops and they'll have me quotes for cleaning, inspecting, and rebuilding.

You might want to put the 304 heads on the 360 was a common thing back in the day.

RE: 81 CJ5 Repair
Thanks for the kind words Gents. Boy I sure can pick'em.

Pistons are removed and can anyone tell me the clearances on the rod bearings? The only cylinders and pistons damaged are 5&6. I'll know the damage when I take it to get washed and honed or bored.

#6 piston damage. It is damaged at the bottom of the cylinder in the block.

Piston #5 damage. The damage is the same location in the adjacent cylinder.

Got the Power Steering degreased and painted. Crank pulley was a blast to clean. Next will be my York and brackets. Air cleaner assembly is almost ready for paint.

On to the exhaust manifolds,,, I didn't want to sand blast them or wire wheel them off so I went with electrolysis. I put both in for two days and I only had to brush off a few small spots on each. They haven't been painted in the pictures that's how they came out. Only reasons I didn't keep the headers was: The header could get caught on something where it was while wheeling and then there was enough heat put out in the engine bay and up through the floor boards to heat an apartment.

For the 360 I decided to go with the Melling MTA1 camshaft, new lifters, Melling oil pump rebuild kit, new rings, full gasket/seal kit, and some other misc. items.
