Utility trailer refresh
High on my to-do list for Choccolocco is a refresh for my 16ft flat bed trailer.

She’s looking tired.

The first thing was to fix the handle on the tongue jack.

I had a broken hammer handle I cut off and I put a 3 inch stainless screw with a couple washers in it. I’m not sure how well that’ll hold up in the long run, but it was free and it helps while I’m working on it.

I’ll get a new jack one day.

Up on jack stands, I spun the wheels to check on the hubs.
They all spun freely and 3 were quiet, one made a little noise, I’ll have to pull that one and check it. The others I’ll pop the cap and check the condition of the grease.

Can’t see a lot in this picture, but I’m considering flipping the axles under the springs to give the tires more clearance. These tires are bigger than the originals and I’m concerned about rubbing the fenders.

Ready for paint.

I went over it with the pressure washer to knock off dirt and loose rust. Got some rattle can Rustoleum to paint it.

Painted and axles are unbolted.
I painted the axle tubes and couldn’t handle them, so the actual axle flip will happen Wednesday.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, right?
An axle flip will give you tire clearance, but it will also give you a higher deck height.
Looking great so far!

RE: Utility trailer refresh
How did you clean it up for paint? Just pressure washed or something else, too?

I'm curious how many cans it took to cover it. It also makes me want to fix mine up as well haha

RE: Utility trailer refresh
When I did my boat trailer, I pressure washed, and then used a wire cup wheel in a drill. Sprayed with a cheap paint sprayer using Rust-Oleum thinned with acetone. I did the whole thing with a quart.

I just pressure washed, it needed a wire brush but I don’t have time right now.

Looks good from 20 feet, but up close it’s still an old trailer.

I used 8 cans of paint.

I’m not worried about the higher deck. I’ll still be able to load the Jeep just fine.
