The Boat Project

RE: The Boat Project
Tried to tilt the outdrive down this weekend so I can remove it. Tilt pump motor is frozen.
I went ahead and ordered a new motor so I can get that functioning (I just want to see something work). I also ordered tire and wheel assemblies. Went with three galvanized rims with brand name (Kenda) tires.

So far I have spent $828.66 on parts and still don't have the registration in my name. I know I'm good to go on that, but I won't feel all warm and fuzzy about doing any real work, or ordering materials until I have that squared away. I've learned not to put myself in desparate situations.

I got the registration transfer back from the owner, and sent it on to the state for processing. That was a key step in the process for me.

I'm having trouble finding marine plywood within driving distance. May have to order online, or use the junk that Lowe's carries. If you know of a place that might have it, please post it so I can research it.

Got three new galvanized wheels with Kenda tires. I think the boat looks way better just by having nice looking rims. It's less depressing to look at.
The spare will need a mount fabbed up.

I replaced the tilt motor. That all works now. The solenoid and breaker are shot, but easy to replace with common parts. I'm just thrilled that it will move up and down under its own power.[Image: 3db22299e7caa6d83177e44bd66ffbe1.jpg][Image: 6ea1873ec31c201cc0b9f9c97cf20c74.jpg]

Eek
I think it took me on to give it place to rest until I can take it on.
The second one (1967) isn't that far away, but have somewhat lost interest (new Jeep and guns may be to blame?). Gotta fix brakes on the white Jeep and then ball joints on the gray Jeep.  Looking for 1 more gun, then maybe getting back on track on the 67 Patrol.

The project is lumbering along. (Pun intended)
I finally found 3/4 marine plywood at Phillips Building Supply in Laurel.
It looks like good quality. Not high-end, but very good. Price was right, too. $89 per 4x 8.

Next thing to buy is resin and cloth.

I removed the outdrive. I noticed a little gear oil leaking from the water inlet. I can only figure that the seals started leaking merely from me rotating the input by hand.
This thing definitely needs an overhaul.

The boys helped me capsize the bare hull so I can get the bottom in shape. It needs some ramp rash repaired, and a keel guard added.
It also has a little dock rash, and needs an overall buff.

The place on the transom that looks like a lightning hit is actually termite trails. It all cleaned off with some effort.

The trailer is in great shape for its age. It will get a fresh winch, jack, wheel seals, grease, paint, bunk carpet, and lights.

RE: The Boat Project
You buff the hull. Mighty shiny to be as old as it looks!

RE: The Boat Project
It was still wet in those pics, but the places that were on the bunks, (most of the bottom) is still factory shiny. I started buffing last evening, and it was coming back very easily.
The deck got a lot more sun over the years, but it looks like it will buff up pretty well also. It's not chalky, at least.

The white part is gel coat, of course, but I think the blue is paint. That part will definitely need refinishing.
At this point I plan to go with a red, white and blue motif. Keep it simple.

I managed to buff out one whole side on Saturday morning before the sun got to me. This boat is showing a lot of promise! The light scratches and oxidation are coming out without sanding.
I am using McGuire's cutting compound, and plan to step up to polish after this. It already has a reflection, so the next step ought to be mind blowing.
I did a sample area on the upward facing part of the deck and it buffed up just as well as the hull.
Slow progress due to hot weather, but I'm not out to break any records.
