F134 Re-build
Alright, let's dive in.
The F134 HiPo threads got me thinking about building one for the heck of it so I say "why not".
I pulled this engine from my ragged 3B and from the SN on the block I knew it was a rebuilt engine.

So my plans for this engine (if it gets a clean bill of health) is to follow up where Itlksez left off; balance the rotating assembly and get a custom cam grind or try to run an L134 cam.

The #3 exhaust valve is stuck open. I only broke 1 head bolt and then I broke a thermostat housing bolt on the head.

Here I have the intake valves, intake valve springs, and spring retainers in the tumbler.

I got the block stripped minus the cam bearings and some plugs. #4 piston had a broken ring and all the bearings looked great. This is shaping up to be a real treat.

More cleaning done today. I don't plan to use the old exhaust manifold, but you know just in case. This is all the boring stuff. Once everything is cleaned up I can start the real work.

I have the block stripped and I’ll be putting it in the oven and shot peen tomorrow. I’ll try to magnaflux the head if time allows.

I'll be buying a new intake seat and four intake valves. The head checked out, no cracks, needs a bit more cleaning. Also, new tappets and rocker arms are needed too. I'll be checking the intake and exhaust springs next. I'm on the fence about grinding the crank myself or outsourcing it.

Here's the engine in the oven before.

After * The oven is just to remove moisture from the grease and oil.

These threads are worth a read and to fill in the blanks for you guys.

RE: F134 Re-build
Tested the valve springs with the Rimac today. All were out of spec so I'll be buying new valve springs. I need a new exhaust valve guide (#3). Measured tip height on the intake valves.

Tomorrow I'll try to get the Cylinder and camshaft bores measured, and mic the crankshaft.

Here I have an exhaust spring set in.

You're bringing back memories of when I used to do that kind of work in a shop in Atlantic City.

Well, I found the new cam bearings. It was quite the search

Cam bearings
#2 is from an AMC V8 304-401
#3 comes from a Hercules
#4 Reo Truck

RE: F134 Re-build
Measured the cylinders Monday.

All were tapered give or take .015 and out of round .005

Looks like we’re going to.080 oh joy

Cooling the engine will now be important as ever

3.205x4.375= 141 CID

I've sent some specs off to Crane to see what they suggest as far as the cam goes. Now hearsay is I can use SBC rockers but I haven't looked into them much. I was thinking of designing a roller tip rocker or rocker arm that i can use bearing instead of a bushing. It would be 3d printed of course but I have faith that it'd be strong enough for the job.

Also did some painting yesterday

Removed the rockers from the rocker shaft and opened up the pickup tube.

Always replace or take apart and clean the pickup tube/screen!!!

RE: F134 Re-build
Friday- one step forward two steps back,,

I started to remove broken fasteners from the block.

The head bolt is a tough customer. I tried to whittle it down flush with a carbide burr and it did but with very little. A cobalt drill bit put a dent in it. Don't want to burn it out with a torch so I'll be looking for someone with an EDM. Next, I start with the exhaust bolts that broke. Got one drilled out and then I broke a screw extractor in the other one.
Got some measurements on the rocker shaft, arms, and brackets. The shaft measures 8-10 thou different where the rockers ride and from the best rocker arm I get 10-13 thou difference in a couple others. I'm sure the extra clearance is fine and let them slide Wink
One exhaust valve cleaned up alright and the rest didn't.
