RE: My new ride
Thanks for another lead fun in dirt.

Is a rebuilt title as bad as a salvage title?

I think it's the same thing, just called different by some people.
To me, it would not be a big deal on a bike in this price range, as it's a lot easier to see & really inspect everything before buying. However, a vehicle is different story.

Let us know if you get something!

I wouldn't be concerned about the title either. Those are pretty tough bikes. You just hav to stay on top of valve adjustments. Won't be a highway bike but good for trails an backroads etc. won't be terrible on the interstate but such a light bike will move around in wind and be turning high rpms

I had considered the wind with a lighter bike since it's highway for me to get to civilization. Or I could take a small winding 'old' highway into town.

I've contacted two sellers already and am waiting on their replies. One is a Honda xr650l and is fairly local.

Any purchase is still a few weeks out for me. But I'll post it if/when it happens.

if you're wanting to ride trails the 250 will be much nicer. dual sports are all about comprimise. you just need to figure out where you want the bike to accel and where you are willing to give up some performance. i'd go with that 250 or a drz 400 over the xr650l. both have much better suspension. and are liquid cooled. the 650 has a wet weight of 350 lbs and seat height of 37". where the 250 is 320 lbs with a seat height of 34" plus the 250 is fuek injected and 6 speed where the 650 is carb and 5 speed.if you arent planning on riding hundreds of miles of interstate at a time then i think the 250 is the better choice. it makes less power than the 650 but has better syspension, fuel injection lower seat and 6 speed trans over the 650.

That's now taken into consideration, redneck.

I just received word we'll likely be out of work around mid August. So I'll be either on hold or getting one dirt cheap to fix up. Likely a dirt bike now for price point then later looking for a dual sport.

Located a 2001 KTM 520 that's street legal. I'll wait for payday and if it's still available I'll offer $2k. Two sets of wheels, one set of knobbies and one street. The conversion looks to be KTM euro parts, too. Pics of it look like it's clean and maintained and the aluminum engine covers have some oxidation that should clean up well. The 2001 has dual exhaust ports and is supposed to be a 6 speed. I have more research to do before then.

I've dug up a little bit of info. OEM can bearing for these is junk. OEM crankshaft nut was an alloy that would heat cycle loose. Both of these issues should have been addressed by now. Should have been. Rear wheel doesn't have rubber bushings/cushioning causing the sprocket bolts to work loose and crack. Constant valve adjustments every 2 hard rides or so. Then there's the normal wear with all the suspension and wheel bearings.

Before I get all in. What can I expect for insurance payments for on road use?

Yeah, the lack of a "cush drive" in the rear hub is a dirt bike thing. Kind of rough on the drive train when on the street. Not usually a deal breaker, though. Dual sports have it.

My son and I both get our insurance through Progressive. We both gamble on waiving the Uninsured/Under-insured coverage. We pay about $75 a year for a single bike.
But basically it is saying that "if I get in a wreck in Mississippi, I can hopefully walk away, because that is the only thing I might have left." because Mississippian's are the WORST at having insurance. (On the verve of a rant...)

Bear in mind that we won our bikes outright. If you take a loan through a bank, etc, they may require you to have more coverage.
Also, the newer it is, the more the tag will cost.
