Humvee would be exact width but going to be hard to find a bad one to chop up, but a friend is making new tops from scratch in GA so I can get a piece made if need be. But I think what I want will have to be custom made. Thanks for the idea.

I’m bumping this with more ideas.

After watching Res build his Slide In and then the pop up last month I figured I’d look around the web for something small that I could pull for long road trips. Especially since I may be swapping directions with work from offshore to land.

So I stumbled across this site, namely the ‘Rough Rider’ http://golittleguy.com/ It has more ground clearance and the pintle hitch is gimmicky. They look cheap and easy enough to build so that lead to another search and this site http://tnttt.com/

Basically you can go to Lowes, find a suitable trailer, measure it & crunch numbers, go inside and buy all the necessary supplies to build it as well as the trailer. Load up the supplies on the trailer and go home to finish.

Simple things like the top railings of a chain link fence, tin flashing for a metal roof, sheet plastic for tub walls that make a shower, roll insulation, etc. Swing by Harbor Freight for a suitable tubing bender and metal brake, too.

First things first. You have to have a fairly clear idea of where, how, and when you will use a camper in order to determine what you need it to be.

Where do you want to camp? This determines how durable it must be, and any spares you might want to pack.

For how long at a time? This determines the provisions you will need to carry.

Alone, or with companions? Again, provisions.

What are the comfort needs of you and your companion/s? This determines the size and type of bedding etc.

Will you camp in it on your way to your destination? If so, how will it work? For example, you wouldn't set up a pop up camper in the parking lot of a Pilot or a Wal-Mart. You could, however, crawl into a camper shell on the back of your pickup.

What are the roughest roads or trails that you will have to traverse with your camper? This determines the suspension needs as well as a means of securing EVERYTHING.

As you can see, anything you build will be a compromise. The trick is to make it fit your perceived needs. You will likely adapt and improve it as you go, but you want to start off on the right ballpark.

Oh, one more question to consider...how and where will you store it?

Reviving an old thread because I was recently sent a link to a good blog about stripping useless weight from an existing rv while customizing it to your specific needs.  https://www.your-rv-lifestyle.com/how-to...y-home-rv/
It reminded me of when Zach suggested that I don't install a table; to use a snack table instead.  Worked out great.  Now I'm taking another look at my cabinet doors.  I'm considering going to netting.

The whole idea is to take an rv and make it easier to tow, or to take off road.

One video of mine that gets an incredible amount of views, believe it or not, is the one I did on my lightweight shower.  It turns out that there are a lot of creative people building camper vans.

But anyway, I was wondering if any of you were still entertaining the thought of building a camper this year. We need more projects to follow on here. Smile
