I'm no officianado, but here goes:
The early pickups, the (Datsun) 520 and 620, were 2wd. The 720 was the first to get 4wd, at least here in the US. I think that started around '81. They were always IFS.
The only solid axle Nissans that I know of, were the Patrols.

Toyota made used a solid front axle through the 1985 model year. They went to IFS and TBI in '86. The TBI was a good thing. IFS was not.

cool thanks for the info, the reason i ask is i found an 85' nissan king cab 4x4 with 200k miles for $2500 its in good condition and i been playing around with the idea of getting an older 4x4 4cyl truck that i could take out and not have to worry about bangin against a tree or gettin a few dent and something that is built pretty tough so i been looking around at the old toyota and nissans looking for something that had a solid axel from the factory.

If you're serious about getting an older truck I may be able to get you one. Theres a guy who offered to sell me his 85 Datsun 4x4 5spd reg. cab w/ the 8 spark plug 4cylinder. I didnt get it because I already have the dirt bike and don't need a 3rd toy. I'll ask if he still wants to sell it.

Nah, its IFS... I finally talked him into cranking the torsion bars and he stuffed some bigger tires on it and beat up the fenders w/ a hammer so it wouldnt rub. Its not a pretty truck, but it would be a fun trail rig

that would probably be a fun little trail rig but 2500 is aweful steep for a stock 23 year old truck

That has the carburated Z24. Same engine as mine, just no TBI. '85 means it is a 720.

Res, if anyone questions your engine, just tell them that you used to pull a big fat suburban out of the mud from time to time. LOL
