RE: 2nd Gen Tacoma Prerunner to 4wd Conversion
Also, I'd like to add that I got the idea of this design from this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/luka...512/page-3
Not as many photos as I would have liked, but it pointed me in the right direction.
Looks like Tacoma World is useful for something after allEek_yello

Just a few more pictures I took today

The rear drive shaft after modifications

This section was shortened about 12 1/2 inches

This section had a slip yoke added

I got my new flange from this website: https://www.yotamasters.com/shop/drivesh...0-u-joint/[/url]

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the U joints were also replaced. They are Spicer 1330s.

The crossmember has one design flaw in that the clearance between it and the front driveshaft is very close.

I drove around in front wheel drive for a little while, and the two never hit. I even drove up my driveway (a pretty steep hill) sideways and made the suspension articulate as much as I could. I don't think it will ever become a problem for me, but it is something to be mindful of for anyone else that may use this design.

This is the switch for the front ADD. I push the bottom of it to engage the front diff and the top to disengage

Always nice to have it exactly the way you want it. I helped a friend with his auto to manual and 2wd to 4wd swap at the end of last year. Nice job!

Thank you! I've read through that thread before. Cool to know you helpedSmile. Your friend is right about finding Tacomas in decent shape being hard. There are bunch of threads out there about 1st gens being converted, probably for this same reason.

Thanks! Grand total it was just shy of $3200. If you figure in the fact that I got a whole slew of new maintenance related parts like wheel bearings and clutch ect, the actual conversion only cost about $2400. I also have a 92k mile 2wd transmission to sell for a few hundred hopefully. If I'm lucky it'll be under $2000 grand total.
