Full Version: Alternator or battery?

I started getting engine noise (rpm related) through my radio as well as my CB a few months ago. I decided to charge my battery a few weeks ago and it was about half dead. On a good charge it no longer had engine noise. Well, last week it started again but I put it on charge quicker and the battery was maybe 1/3 down. My truck sits, sometimes for 3 weeks at a time, not running.

Could this be alternator or battery getting old? The alt has what appears to be debris on the slots where the coils can be seen and the battery is at least 3 years old. It could be some of both. Also, do I need the alt removed for a test to be performed on it?

I'm also looking into a HO alt, if it is the alt, and will post discoverings of it when things evolve.
any of the parts stores can test them both while they are still on the truck

That's what I was hoping. Might as well replace it if I had to pull it.
Id say battery since it sits up
Take your battery terminals off and clean them really well before going any further. It could be that simple. Corroded connections can disguise themselves as other problems.
I agree with res, clean everything. I always do a ten minuite charge, then load test battery. If all that works out to the good, i would take it somewhere and let them test the alternator on the truck. a
