Cut to the chase:
97 Hardbody regular cab; borrowed from dealer for test drive over night
* 165,000 miles
* Clean inside and out except good size dent behind right rear, paint all original and in great shape
* Engine purrs smooth and quiet all day and all the way home from the dealer,,,until not long ago

Short distance from the house, spit and sputter and quit running, battery ran down while trying to restart.

Fuel filter? Where is it? In tank? On rear frame rail?
Fuel pump? Odd timing for it to go, but 165,000 miles?
Did these trucks still run a coil in 97? But probably wouldn't spit and sputter til death. Would probably just shut off, if coil.

Answers, quick? Will be towed back to dealer tomorrow. If easy enough to trouble shoot, maybe buy time and evaluate problem!

If it were running, what is it worth? KBB.com says $750 Trade In for Good condition. Of course, that would mean RUNNING!

Curious to learn what it was when you figure it out. If I have any more ideas I will pass them along.
My Pathfinder did that to me a time or two, it was the MAF sensor. All those symptoms is exactly what it was doing.
Alternator!

battery was new when it was traded in. It ran down going down the road, not trying to restart. Josh put the battery out of his truck in, fired up, and drove back to the dealer.

He decided he didn't want it, not knowing how many other repairs he would have to do over the next year or so. I would have bought it.
I would have, also. Oh, well. Shrug
