I just bought a 1994 HB 4x4 and I have a question. If the CV axle does not turn when the hub is locked does that mean the hub is bad or could something else be wrong?

I am pretty sure the hubs are factory and if it is bad can they be rebuilt? If so is it worth it or would it be better just to buy new aftermarket hubs? I am trying to get by as cheap as possible as this is more of a daily driver than a trail rig but I would like for everything to work. How much would aftermarket hubs cost?
Is 4wd not working? How are you checking them? Are you jacking the wheel up and turning it by hand?

If they say Nissan on them, they are factory.

You are saying that the hubs have a knob that you have to turn with your hand to lock? If so, they are indeed manual hubs. If a manual hub does not lock in, take it apart and clean it. Don't make the mistake of packing it with grease. They only need oiling or a light amount of grease.
Yea I'd just tear them apart check it out see if anything seems to be out of place.. If its more of a daily driver i'd just rebuild them save money.. If need to be rebuilt Ebay is a great place to buy parts but watch out!! away's read there ratings b4 you buy from a person and read everything on the ebay page because you can get screw over if your not careful. But its probably just really dirty and nasty and wont lock in a simple cleaning might be all it needs just pay attention when you tear it apart so you know how it goes together if its your first time.. not hard to do.. GOOD LUCK
You will need a small snap ring pliers.

Thanks. I have some snap ring pliers.

To answer your initial question res I put some brake pads on this weekend and was kinda looking over stuff and while I had the wheel off I locked the hub and spun the rotor and the pass side CV axle spun but when I locked the driver side and tried the same thing the CV axle did not spin.

I did not see where they said nissan but at the same time I did not see any identifying marks on them at all. They do look as if they have been taken apart before though. Are there any writeups anywhere about taking the hubs apart? I looked on ebay and came up empty is there any other place to get parts? What is the best nissan forum I can look at for this kind of info?

Thanks again.
My guess is that it just needs to be freed up inside. There is a light gauge spring that slides a piece over the axle splines to engage it. If that piece cannot slide freely, it will not engage.
I had one not engage because the snap ring had popped out of place.

They are really simple. Just take it apart and it will probably make more sense to you. Nothing to be afraid of.

Post a picture of it if you can. We may be able to identify them.
Thanks Res I don't know when I will be able to take it apart but when I do I will let you know what I find.
There aint much parts in that hub.. You shouldnt need a manual or a write up on how to tear it down just belongs if you take it apart and pay attention what order everything was in and put it back together.. It's really not a hard job, its very easy and just in case you do forget how to put it back together you have the other side that you could always tear apart and see how it goes.. I found some warn hubs around on the internet BUT!!! but there spost to be asian hubs on that nissan from factory which if there anything like a toyota hub the aisan hubs are MUCH stronger than the warn or anyother after market hubs.. I say tear it apart and learn and if you have any questions do as res saids post pictures and you'll get help..
yea I learned the lesson bout to much grease in the hub. Lame had to take it back off and take alot of the grease back out. Rockon2
