Got a cobra cb from summit, 5.13's w/install kit, and an ARB diff cover. My question is im stuck between 33x12.50 Baja Claws and 34x12.50 Trxus MT, and im hearing people run 33's with that low of a gear and not having trouble. They just run a higher rpm, which is tolerable according to them. I know i need the 34's to slow my rpm down when i get the gears in, but people are telling me mixed match statements, they'll fit and they won't. I know one guy who has 34" LTB's on his passport and another guy has 35" MTZ on his rodeo (ya'll have seen this one). Its not the front fenders thats' the problem, it's the rear. You can only trim so much, go too far and you'll be in the door. I want the claws so bad i can taste it, BUT i need the 34"s. Several people are running 33x12.50 Trxus on there rodeos with only a 3" SL. Which makes me think since i have a 3" BL on top i should be able to clear 'em.
Suggestion/recommendations?
You can always get longer bumpstops to keep them out of the fenders...the M/T's are more road friendly, though. 1" of tire shouldn't make that much difference in rpm's, either. If it were me, I'd go with the 33's. That's still plenty of tire, they're cheaper, last better on the road, and they'll fit easily.
You have a point. I've heard nothing but good things about the claws, you just can't rotate 'em. They should fit snug with no problem right now.
I know 5.13's are a little extreme, 4.88's would be better, you think it'll be ok for everyday driving? Im getting new rims to mount these on too, gonna keep the 32's around just in case.

You can rotate the claws front to back...that'll help with even wear. Make sure your front end is in good shape, and they should wear fairly evenly. You can always have them broken down and rotated every 2 or 3 rotations. I don't know anything about the stock gearing on your vehicle, so can't really comment about what gears you'd need. Take stock gearing, divide by stock tire diameter, and multiply by new tire diameter to get what gear size you need to get back to stock rpm's. Then go to the next lower gear size to get a little off-road grunt.
For instance, my XJ came with 3.55's and 27.5" tires. I need to regear for my 32's, so here's the calculation: 3.55 / 27.5" = .129 * 32" = 4.13. The next lower gearset would be 4.56's, but I like the highway mileage, so I'm planning on 4.10's.
I've done that tire calculator chart, and it said 4.67 to get back to stock and 5.09 for the extra power. 4.77's are somewhat available for my rodeo, they are almost unicorns now since they came in the '98 Amigo 4cyl. Realisticly a 4.88 would be the next size up that would be "stockish". I don't care too much about highway, usually never on it unless i have too. Back and forth from Laurel/Hattiesburg is all it's ever going to see other than my typical city driving.
go ahead and get a set of 35in claws! u know how much i liked mine and with the body lift and suspension lift they will fit i promise!
I ran the claws on my burb, and the complaint that I have, is going in reverse on ice. But I wouldnt amagin you would have a whole lot of prob with ice. If I were still in Ms, I would definatley go with the claws again. Up here in Colorado, Im not going to go with them.
id go with the 33s... you have OD and its not like you drive very fast anyways. i ran 38s and 5.13s with no OD and it killed my highways driving.. but i could light them 38s up NO problem. you prolly wont get that thing over 65 anyways so you wont be reving that hard. i havent done any math to comfirm this just goin by the usual standard of a .78 ish OD in most vehicles
imo 5.13 are going to be way too low for 33s
I agree with redneck. When I was on 33s 4.10s were just a little too high, 4.56s would have been great. I am on 36s now running 4.88s and everything is good so far.
