Well, I bought a truck with a bad trans in it, expecting to swap the one out of my old truck that I wrecked. I knew it was different trans, but figured that it couldn't be that much to swapping them. Wrong! Thanks to all the computer crap, it won't work. My old truck had the 700R4, the new one has the 4L60E. The 700R4 has a electronic torque convertor lock-up and manual valve body shifting, with a kick down cable. The 4L60E has electronic torque convertor and electronic vavle body. There is no where to hook up the kick down cable on the new truck, without doing some rigging. And to get the older throttle body and kick down cable hooked up right, would have to swap out whole wiring harness, which in turn would have to swap dash, ECM, etc. etc. So now I have to get the 4L60E rebuilt. But, $1300 later, I will have a new trans, with HD 3rd capsule, corvette servo, and some kinda upgraded computer to shift the vavle body. Well enough b*tching and whining. Just hope no one else makes the same mistake. Just remember, 88-91 = 700R4, 92-95 = 4L60E, 98- newer = different 4L60E
Yea I can feel your pain.
I tried swapping a transmission in my 93 Ranger one time with one from my uncle's Ranger that he blowed the motor up in. Needless to say after a week of trying to get it to work, I took the old one and just had it rebuilt. That was about 2 years ago and it has been running good ever since.
Chevyman you said something about upgrading computer to shift valve body, is there anything like a programmer (like the ones for motors) or something that you can add to transmissions to help with pulling and offroading.
My trans guy told me to me that the computer that shifts the vavle body is bad about going bad and slamming the gears, which in turn, tears the trans up. He said that the one he is puttin in mine is the new updated one that they just came out with.
As far as making it better offroad and towing, I know on a Chevy you can change the Servo out. They got 3 different ones for the 700R4 and the 4L60E. You have the stock one that sucks, then you have the corvette, like I got, then I just found anothervon TCI's site. It's supposed to be better then the corvette. I didn't get a chance to ask my trans man about it. Will when I get home, you don't have to pull the trans or pan to change the servo. I might go with the one from TCI later, my trans man didn't charge me extra for the corvette, and the one from TCI is about $85.
You every heard of Transgo shift kit? It's about the only thing upgrade wise I could find for my transmission. I have heard of shift kits for drag race but are they any good in 4x4 trucks?
Yeah transgo, a good kit. I think they got one called the trans pac. It lets you set up like you want it. I had a TH350 with that kit in it.
