Want everyone to jump in on this one. The 79 Bronco is running again and soon to be undergoing major surgery to make a dedicated off road rig. C6 tranny with mildly modified but very strong 400 motor with cam and 4bbl carb. 9" ford rear and Dana 44 front. Stock 3:55 gears. Should I weld front and rear diffs???? Just the rear??? What will welding the front do to the steering on the trails. Come on guys. Fill me in.
lock the rear and put a LSD in the frt.
LSD would be cool but not enough $$ for that. Gonna have to resort to welding or leave it open. Would welding make it too hard to turn??? Will probably for sure weld the rear. Any other low buck ideas on the front???
Twisted has his rear welded, I don't really know, i know with my front lock rite locker it is still hard to turn.
I have only the rear welded on the 4Runner. So far I like that just fine. I would leave it open and save up for a locker. That D44 just might live longer too.
What size tires are you going to run?
33X12.5 on her for now but want to go to 35's. I think that will probably be all the Dana 44 should handle. Ghostrider seems to think that is big enough for the 44 too. Keep those cards and letters coming.
welding the front works in easy goeing just unlock the longside hub easy turning and still have a true 3 wheels pulling if i had a way to disconect my front it would be welded to but it turns all the time but with hubs youll love it had a 75 f100 with 40's on it held up well until i got real rough with it then i had trouble with the spindels snaping but i never broke a front axel
Dedicated trail rig, weld away.
youll have a hell of a time turning when the hubs are engaged, but you could run a hydro assist to fix that... aussie makes about the cheapest lunchbox locker, priced around $240 shipped
May I suggest something like an ARB or maybe a Electid for the front, you can choose when you want it....
