I offered to help work on a buddy's truck at work the other day, needed the money for my new truck but I'll get to that later. Anyways like the title says its a 98 with the 4.6, it's been running rough and he had mentioned getting a tune up on it so i went and bought plugs, wires, and coil packs and went to work. I only got about half way done with the time i had but the thing is the spark plugs were COVERED in oil! I think its more than your average blown rings kind of leak. I've been there and done that twice myself. The spark plugs had oil all the way past the threads and to the porcelain. I don't know what to do? do i stop where i am and start pullin the motor instead or just keep on going almost certain that it's not gonna fix the problem?
Are you sure that there wasent oil down in the spark plug wells? And when you pulled them out the oil just ran down? I seen this alot. usually on the passenger side head. (Bank one) If it was #4 install a new pcv, and change the oil. Oh and for some unkown reason on the 4.6 use motorcrap spark plugs. I wont run right with the others. I seen several come in with a brand new set of plugs but not the right ones. Also If ya still think its internal engine failure do a compression leak down test and that should tale, tale whats going on.
man you're dead on...it was all 4 on the pass. side. I haven't had a chance to pull right side yet..I went to 3 diff. places and autozone doesn't even carry motorcraft, or at least that's what they told me. I got bosch platinums. Also it is throwing a code for the egr valve. you think this would have anything to do with it?
Not the code for egr wouldnt have anything to do with the oil. What code is it? Po401? If it is I can tell you how to fix it. But about the oil situation. Change the pcv and oil and check the heater hose right above the #4 and make sure the clamp ant leaking. I seen this alot too.
Oh and bosh plat. Might be okay. If it starts having a random misfire, or the C.E.L comes on, or starts flashing. And it sets a po300 or p0316. Its the plugs.
ok new plugs and wires done and its still runnin a lil rough, better but still not 100%. By the way it was exactly as you said, oil from the top rather than internally. Do you think EGR valve could be the rest of the problem? If so, how were you talking about fixing it? oh and they were autolite's instead of bosch's...Im beginning to think im gonna wind up eatin this one
Yeah the autolites ant to good in my opinion. I need to know what exactly is the code. And It is probably not the egr valve. Okay take off the throttle body. You will need to remove the air induction. The EGR valve. Throtttle linkage and vacum lines on the throttle body. The throttle body should have 5 8mm head bolts that holds it down. When you get the throtte body off. There is a grove in the intake and throttle body that probably will be stopped up with carbon build up. Also the hole where the Egr valve goes is probably stopped up. Also if the code is a po401 you probably need a sensor called a DPFE. Sent me a PM if ya need my number or just look on the recovery list.
Run a can of seafoam, then re check codes....it sounds like EGR, are you running KOER?
GHOSTRIDER Wrote:are you running KOER?

uhh....what is that exactly?
With a scan tool, well real scan tools you have three test to run on the obdII. KOEO=Key On Engine Off. This test some of your sensors. KOER=Key On Engine Running. This test the rest of them. Then you have the DTCs this lets you review all the codes
