i just got this xj w/ a 4.0 about 2 weeks ago, i drove it from where i got it to my house which was only a couple miles... parked it and began installing my rubicon express 4.5" lift, 33" boggers (that i bought for a previos jeep and never installed) and cutting the sh*t out of the front fenders only to drive it one time and BAM water boils out the expantion tank!!! i replaced the water pump and thermostate (180*)....STILL RUNS HOT.... replaced clutch fan....STILL RUNS HOT...took out thermostate.....STILL RUNS HOT....put it back in and took stock fans off and put in 2 high flow electric fans.... and you guess it STILL RUNS HOT.......
PLEASE HELP ME ASAP!!!!!!!!!
Start off basic... is the radiator full, and did you burp the air out of the system? Another question.. does it do it sitting still, or when you are driving as well. Does your heater come on and blow hot?
How long does it take to overheat?

um... i think the radiator is full... as far as burping the system HOW do you do that??? i unscrewed the temp sender from the head by the fire wall and let the water come through then put it back... sitting still is the only place i have tried it because i want it to not over heat in a mud hole (this is only a play toy to a point) i am not sure about the heater i wil try it in the morning(what if it don't blow warm??)

about 10 mins for it to go to 220* then about 5 minutes fot it to get to 240-260*
Back flush the radiator. You can try a flush-n-fill kit or remove the radiator and backwash it. It sounds like you have no flow.
As it is warming up, you should be able to feel the top hose get hot when the t-stat opens. Once it opens, you should be able to feel the lower hose get warm, but not hot.
If it does not get warm, the rad is clogged.
If it has that aluminum stop-leak crap in the radiator, and it sat up for a long time, you need to remove the rad and flush/shake that junk out of there. It will keep floating up and clogging the tubes.
i will try that but i have also done a back wash with it still in the jeep(not sure how good it was) and also the lower hose is getting warm but i would say probly only a 1/8 of the temp as the upper hose..... i believe it is a replacement radiator becaust the end caps are metal and it is a shinnier black also
Hmmmmm..... Head gasket leak pushing the coolant into the overflow? You wouldn't necessarily see water vapor from the exhaust depending upon where the leak bridged the gasket.
Run it until it gets hot, but shut it off before it over heats. Feel the cap. If you can hold your hand on it, it is either low on coolant or you are a tough son-of-a-gun.

i have done that also..lol
coolant stays in the tank and around 220* i have shut it off and yes it is pretty friggin hot...
head gasket leak??? how could i find out for sure... compression test or leak down test?? what is the compression on a 89 4.0?
i can make a 4800lb ford lightning run 10's through the 1/4 mile at 124+ mph on pump gas and full wieght.... i can even take the supercharger off and put a 88mm turbo on it but i can't get a 89 xj to even run under 240* in 60* weather....... i suck at life....LMAO
