I have a Dell Dimension 4400 that I bought in college. A few months ago my kids broke the cdrom drive off of it and it wouldn't come on anymore. I unplugged the drive and it worked for a little while now it won't even come on anymore. It has been acting strange and running kind of slow for a little while, but now it won't even come on. I'm using a loaner hard drive for now until I can get mine fixed. Any computer whizzes out there with advice???
i have a friend that is certified by microsoft you can call for advice, his name is jared, 662-416-5132
Have you put a new cdrom in it yet?
Not yet, thought I could maybe just use it for a little while till I got another one. Would a cdrom make it go haywire like that?
Its possible. The CDROM is going to be on the IDE bus. Now some of the Western digital Hard drives are funny about having a Master Slave relationship and if the Western Digital Hard Drive is set to be Master and not set as SINGLE then yes it would cause a problem. I would pull the cover off and pull the hard drive out and se what the Din Pins are set as. There should be a key or sylobus on the front.
I have no idea what you just said, in dummy terms please??
He is right some computers wont read right if all the extras are not connected with the proper settings. If its a desktop model its not hard I could do it myself but as far as talking you through it not sure. Hopefully Chris can break it down for you. If not I will try to talk you thru it on the phone, first chance we get.
Take the hard drive out and look at the top of it. You should see a pictuer of dip switched labeled. Single, Master, Slave or something very similar. Then look at the edge of the hard drive and find when the Jumper (a small piece of plastic that has metal in it used to jump electricity from one PIN to another) make sure it is in the SINGLE position.
I FINALLY broke down and took it to the shop...guy fixed it for under $100..said it needed a new power surge and he cleaned some stuff out of the hard drive. I sure wasted a long time dreading that trip to the shop for nothing
I'm finna put another computer that i acquired on here for sale. It quit working too (hence why I took my dell to the shop) not sure what's wrong with it but I'll sell it all (monitor, keyboard, hard drive, printer, speakers, mouse) CHEEEEEP
