i know its kind of a dumb question but, when installing a rear shock does it matter what end is up and if it does what side should it be?
It doesnt really matter. Most people put the boot at the top so that it doesnt get ripped or collect mud/ water.
The shock will tell you what end to mount up or down.

yeah they are direction specific
ive always been told it didnt matter. depending on the shock
well right now i have the boot end on the top
on my 81 yota that i sold not long ago i had all 4 turned over. never had any problems.
I think the only one that has to be mounted right side up is a gas charged twin tube...if it matters it should tell you on the shock.
