i dont mean to be a butt but if the dana 30 is such a good axle why do all the jeep guys get ride of them for atleast a 44. please do your self a favor and go ahead and find a dana 44. it is a much stronger axle.

the dana 30 is a decent axle as long as you run small tires. jeep guys swap them out for 44's because they want to run bigger tires. a dana 30 should be fine with 33's 35's are pushing it and you will break it if you push on it hard enough. with that said the normal failure point is the u-joint failing or the ears on the shaft stretching and spitting out the u-joint cap. the newer dana 30s use the same size u-joints as a dana 44. but the dana 44 also has lockout hubs and normal wheel bearings instead of the unit bearings that the dana 30 has. with all that said if you plan to stay with 35's or smaller a dana 30 is your cheapest and easiest way to go. and spare shafts are cheap and easy to come by as well

Pete's right about that one! I just caught this, and I realize I'm a bit late... If you went to a Solid D44, you could easily wheel with 33-37" tires on that ranger. There's not enough weight to severely affect stub shafts and U joints. If you did a lot of crawling where traction is a BIG deal, it might become a problem with 36" or 37" tires. Only thing is that a D44 is going to be a little wider than your ranger's 8.8". I think, if you upgrade to a D44, match it with a 9" out of an Econoline Van. Yes... you CAN find 9" EVERYWHERE, if you know where to look.
Have a look at those SAS threads on FullSizeBronco, and also check out Pirate4x4.com's Ford Section You should be alright. I'd really try to stick around the D44 & 9" though.. that would be PERFECT on a Ranger!
