I need to pick up some grease before I do mine.
I took the cover off today, though. Yuck! Gnarly looking black grease in there. It looks like the planetary gears and cage will pull out the end so that I can clean the old stuff off. I guess I will find out when I get a fresh tub of grease and get after it.

No harm done!!! Most people don't believe me when i tell them about me changing the oil in my winch!
Rez.... did you grease your winch yet? I'm planning on pulling the cover off of mine today and taking a look. Think I'll replace the mounting bolts as well, since it took quite a hit that day on the Laurel Interstate.

I just picked up a fresh tub of grease yesterday. I hope to get to it today or tomorrow.
I went to the Discount Auto and picked up a $9.00 tube of "Green Grease". Waterproof and supposed to be good stuff. I pulled the plate and wiped out all of the "black crap" I could get to. Like cleaning out a 2 month old baby's diaper. I packed it back with the green grease, bolted it back up and called it a job well done. I'm going to pull the line out this afternoon and rewind it just to get the grease worked into the gears real good.
I did mine today. I took pictures, so I did a how-to in the Outdoor Equipment forum. Here's the link:

Sometime in the near future, I plan to tear down the motor and do some preventive maintenance on that as well.
Thanks for the tip, Spoiled.
Did you ever tear down the motor side, Rez? Just curious to see how that went if you did.
