Every since MonkeyTown, the jeep hasn't run right since. Here lately its gotten worse.

My setup is an 81 CJ7 with an AMC 360. I think its a late 70's model motor but not certain. I know the auto parts stores look at the 304 for parts on the 81 model. Its got an Edelbrock 4 barrel carb on it also.

Symptoms: Jeep runs fine for about 30 minutes but a couple times it will hesitate and then catch again. After the engine has had a good time to warm up, it will start missing and hesitating again. I will have steady throttle and then all of a sudden it stops going. I will feather the gas a bit more and it catches. Sometimes when I don't feather it, I get a HUGE backfire. Its almost like its being starved for fuel. After a few backfires, it will start jumping almost like you release the clutch before giving it enough gas, but I never shifted. Don't have a tach so I don't know my RPM's. When I first replaced my T-Stat and water pump, I was running average 160*, now when it starts acting up, its nothing to see it hit 190*, and its averaging 170* now.

What I have done: Replaced the air filter with one thats taller but still fits on the carb. Replaced the fuel filter. Replaced the Distributor cap and the little arm thing inside of it.

What I might do next: Replace the plugs. I think the wires are good, and the plugs have some black on the tips, so I know that I will need to replace them soon.
sounds like the coil is breaking down.
Thats what I was thinking
If it has a catalytic convertor, it could be plug up.
i was thinking it may be the coil too. or trash in the carb
ditch the coil and ignition control module, old ditributor, and go with an HEI setup and open the plug gaps up to .060. Ive had some of the same problems on some AMC V-8s I have had, now I run GM HEI one wire distributors on everything AMC that I fool with.

Also, need to check/reset the timing.

Dont worry with what year your motor is, 360's are all the same specs. Be sure it is stamped 360, cause all 1967-up AMC blocks look the same (290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401) it will have the cubic inches stamed on the low sides of the block.

Just remember Leigh, if you get in a bind, I have about 8-10 AMC motors waiting on you!!! Smile

He is just worried about the year because apparently NO ONE that works at any of the parts stores around here can find a part without putting it in the computer first. And they need a year, make, and model before they will help you. Woe unto you if you do any kind of engine swap and go looking for parts! You will literally see their heads explode!!! LOL!!!!!

Boyd, will the same GM HEI setup I have on mine work on Lee's? If so, I can get him the paperwork you gave me and let him get the part numbers from that.

no, yours is for a 6 cyl. It came from CRT Performance. They have a webiste, ship fast!
How much and how hard is it to setup?
So I just filled up at the Kangaroo on Hwy 80 in Brandon. Turned onto 471 going home and the motor dies. I tried to crank it back but it wouldn't turn over. I hear some honking behind me, I figured it was because I wasn't moving fast enough. NOOOO I had fire coming from the exhaust. The guy behind me dialed 911 and then Brandon PD and the fire dept. came out. Doesn't seem anything was burned under the jeep, it looks that it was just excess fuel in the exhaust system. I think for some reason I flooded the engine, and thats why the jeep died, and then fuel was dumped into the exhaust and then it caught fire.

Guys I really need to get this fixed but I don't know what else to do. I am going to pick up new plug wires tomorrow and probably Sunday David will help me reset the timing.

Does anyone have any other clue what is going on?
