Tapping or Clicking

I have a 92 4.0L I6 with 185,000 miles on it and when your standing over the motor you can hear a tap or clicking sound under there i know i have an exhaust leak around the header but i think i may have some lifters sticking because its not loud enough to be a rist pin. I have recently put new main bearings in it. not sure if man bearings make a sound. But, it sounds like its coming from the top of the motor if it is my lifters can it be fixed or are they non adjustable? Please help me out it drive me crazy.

Thanks alot,
Corey
Cory, sorry to tell you this but thats a Jeep for ya! Sooner or later they all make that noise. Gotta luv it! It's a Jeep thing you wouldnt understand! j/k
you can try using a higher octane gas, my old BOWTIE had the same noise and it's from using cheap gas.
im with yazoo jeeper on this one... its just a normal noise that those old I6s make.. you can try to run some marvel mystery oil in it or somethin... it may quiet it down
If they are adjustable, they can be adjusted. I an not familiar with that particular engine.

I used a product called Lifter Quiet years ago on an Olds 301. It poured in with the oil. Worked like a charm to free up the sticky lifters. I had the car for another 6 years and another 100.000 miles and never had a hung lifter again.
I can't recall who made the stuff.
awesome man. Thanks alot guys.
Mine does it unless I use Lucas with every oil change.

I ran Lucas in mine at every oil change as well. Im a firm beliver that is the only reason I got 325,xxx miles out of it. It definately helps silence the noises of the I6 motor.
also be sure to use a quality oil filter. not the cheap fram junk. i prefer wix or napa gold filters(which are also wix)
i have been running castrol syntec and royal purple off and on - seafoamed it about 2k miles ago for the first time and have always run fuel additives and some oil additives ... i think the regular maintenaince with a healthy oil filter ( i run a k and n) is the key to long term life in these motors... mine runs very quiet and i believe if i popped the cover off it would be pretty clean ... this noise is common and is a combo of sticky lifters and other gunk building up... heck take the cover off and do some manual cleaning, fresh oil and and an additive and i bet it will be much better...
