First I will explain that the truck (an 1989 cheve 1500 is across the state and I have to retrive it sometime soon. It is 4WD, standard cab and blue. Gee I don't know much. LOLOne other note it has sat in a field for three years.
The tranny is stuck in 4WD, low range. My grand son isn't a great wrencher and I am 68 and disabled somewhat.
Maybe some one here has had the same problem and knows what to tell hime to check.
I have already told him to check the linkage, rods and vacume switches.
there is a noise (grinding???) when he trys to put it into gear.
I wish I could tell you more but until I can get to the truck itself I am running blind.
Any ideas would be of a help. Thanks in advance.

you need to talk to tranny man!! his name is ryan porter with ranco transmissions. his number is 601 939-9184. he is out of town for the rest of the week but with you problem i sure anyone up there can help. just call and ask for russ he can prob tell you were to start
Thanks off roader will give the number some finger work tomorrow.
Make sure he puts the trans in Neutral. It won't shift out of 4 low when the trans is in park or any other gear, except neutral. He might have tried this, but just trying to help.
I have a 98 chevy 1500 as an everyday driver. I know they used a different transfer case but on mine i have to be rolling slightly to get it to go into gear or come out you may try that. If the linkage is straight and neurtal dont work it my be a bent shift fork inside but i dont know exactly how the thing is built though
Thanks for the posts. I have relayed the info and also Russ's number, he also has someone coming over this evening to help him try to get it going.so maybe I'll have a new, used play truck in a week or so.
Updated info! I hope
Spoke with my grand son last evening and he relates the following.
His cousin??? looked at the xfer case and told him it needed (a new switch and solinoid)
Now all i have to do is figure out just what he is speaking of. I see nothin in my Haynes manual about either. (still looking)If it has those could he be talking about vacume switches of some king and do any one know about those parts and what they do? Thanks k8fa.art
The low range has nothing to do with any of the solonoids or the transfercase switch. Only thing that the solonoid or the transfercase switch has any thing to do with is the front diff locking in. If it is in low range, thats in the transfer case.
That is what I thought also but it has been since the late 60s since I worked on any tranny 4wd and that was in the service.LOL I am too damn old! I am into radio and internet now trying to find out info and am grasping at straws. I have an idea that I'll have to borrow a trailer and go get the darn thing and haul it home and crawl my old body under neath to fine out just what is wrong. Ha
No I'm not looking forward to that little task.
I am thinking that the problem is related to the xfer case because of his saying that it will not come out of low range. he says that he disconecterd the front shaft but it didn't help. That to me means the hang up is in the case. Forks, plantery gears or sycro trouble. 300 miles from him so have to depend on his info.He also is not sure where the grinding noise is coming from, the axels or the case or the tranny. He is a good grandson, but he is making me feel old, and dummer. LOL
Thanks for the help.
UPDATE
Grandson says he has it running in 4WD high range and now we are trying to get it to me Saturday the 2nd. (I hope!)Locating a used xfer case as we speak and might order a rebuild kit to have on hand. If things go right will end up with a spare on the bench.
