Not having the needed diagnostic tools, nor the money to persue this, I admitted I was stumped. Mother-inlaw took it to a shop today. The mechanics there are stumped as well.

My wife actually drove the car to the shop. On the way, she turned off the "power" button, whatever that is. She said it ran almost perfectly after that. There is still a hesitation, however. I am curious to see what they find.

It was a faulty coil. The mechanic replaced the coil, plugs and wires. The plugs were not very old, but they looked pretty bad. Maybe their early demise was due to the failing coil.
Anyway, I thought I would pass that along. It may help someone.
