Been talking over the weekend with some friends and we have all decided we want to go tent camping one weekend this fall. Only problem is, none of us have been in years, and don't know the "good" spots.
We can do a campground if need be, but were curious if there are any places off of creeks and rivers within an hour or so of Jackson that have some cool scenery and trails, etc.
Do you want to backpack, or truck your gear?
I can hook you up in DeSoto NF, but it is not very scenic. I usually have camp/trail ride or two every fall.
I have two backpacking trips planned that will be by a creek. Labor Day, and Columbus Day. Both are short hike overnighters.
I, personally, would love to backpack, but the ladies of the group will not go for that I'm sure. Where is DeSoto?
DeSoto NF, Chickasawhay Ranger District is in Jones and Wayne Counties, east of Laurel.
My truck trips include a portable outhouse. I bring that along mainly for the ladies.

Not exactly scenic. I is a managed, pine forest. Just lots of trees and good stories around the campfire.
The advantage is that it is free. State lakes are another good option.
State Parks are great. Most have water, fire rings, and tables at tent sites...some even have shower facilities. My wife has no problem tent camping at these places. They're safe, well kept, and less than $5/night. Most are very scenic, too. I recommend Tishomingo and JP Coleman.
Another option is doing what I used to do. Pack up the canoe, throw it in a river, such as the Strong River, and paddle it to a nice looking sandbar. Make camp and chill. Next day, pack her up and either move to the next spot, or head to the vehicle you had at the end of the run. Those were some great camping trips. You don't have that truck or campground office to run to if you forgot something.
I have some friends at work that do this...all they take is beer. Fish for food, and cook it on site.
awesome ideas... thanks for your help guys! Gonna run all of this by everyone...
