okay I have a 1969 Wagoneer. It had the motor rebuilt about 10 years ago, and hasn't been fooled with since. I got a thread about it on SMJC.net. But I got it Friday and cleaned the Carburetor and it would run as long as I kept my foot on the gas. Wouldn't idle. I tweaked the carb a little and still wouldn't do alot. So today I sprayed the Carb. down with carburetor cleaner and sprayed some in the barrel. I turned the key and it cranked right up. But then it went dead like usual. So I sprayed it again, cranked it up, and started spraying the cleaner in the barrel a squirt at a time. It stayed running as long as I would squirt it with the cleaner. But I stopped and it started sputtering, so I sprayed it good one last time and got in the jeep and gently mashed the gas pedal and it went dead....Anyone know what might be going on? It quit because I mashed the pedal. but dont know why, and dont know why the cleaner kept it running.Help is appreciated!
Sucking air around the base gasket, maybe?
Possibly, but I think the gaskets between the carb and manifold are good. There is a spacer between the carb and manifold that has a hose coming off, but is plugged up. Maybe used to be the PCV hose? Is it needed?
Which carb is on the motor? I prefer to tear apart and clean any carb that has sat for more than a year. It sounds like a fuel meter issue. Depending on the make of the carb, there are many different things to check to start to narrow it down.
It's a Carter, model RBS. That's all it says. Should I get a Carburetor Kit? Because I dont really know what all is in a kit other than gaskets, but I can make them.
A kit shouldn't run you more than $20, and has lots of gaskets that you won't want to cut out (teeny, tiny holes in them) and some springs, power valve, etc. It's really worth it, as some even come with instructions!!
And a gallon of the stuff you soak the parts in. Hydraseal (sp?) is one brand. I have a couple of cans of the stuff. It deep cleans and loosens the gunk so that it rinses off with water. Compressed air gets the water out. Awesome stuff.
I just took the carb completely apart and used carb cleaner to shoot up in all the little holes I could find using the straw on the cleaner can. Hope it helps, but keep bringin the suggestions!

Berryman's B12 Chemtool is another. Looks like a gallon paint can, but only has 3/4 gal. in it, plus has a metal basket that sits inside and holds small parts so you don't have to fish them out.
I'll look into that stuff. When I get to working on it again, I will try the carb the way it is, and if it dont change anythin I will get some of that stuff to soak it in. I am gonna get some new fuel line to run from the fuel pump to the carb and take out the old metal lines.
