Basically there is just a certain point in throttling up that it will sputter and want to die. You can hear it whistling real loud from sucking air, I reckon..[/quote]

Move it slowly by hand and feel for any binding. It could be possible that the advance is sticking at a point until you slam it.

I know where it vacuum advance is, and I know where the hose from it runs to the carb, but how do you check if it's binding?
You can take the cap off so you can see it, then connect a hand vacuum (or your mouth) and draw a vacuum to see if it moves by vacuum.
Grab the parts with yoru hand and feel how free they are.
okay. I gotta see if I can take that cap off next time I can work on it. There is a little arm that comes out the back and connects to part of the distributor. Should that thing move?
Got back to the house from going to ole miss, and cranked the waggy right up! It doesn't sputter and die like it was the other day when I hit the gas. Now my new problem that I will work on tomorrow is the shifting linkage. I can sometimes get it into 1st and reverse, but usually it will only shift into 2nd and 3rd, no matter where I move the shifter..So I hope it is just in the linkage. I have a couple floor shifters that I may try and install because the mechanism on the steering column may be shot.. The after that I gotta work on the locking hubs. On spins freely, but the other seems to be stuck in "lock" and I cant turn it even with pliers. Apparently the 4wd works also. Good stuff..
Now the wagoneer cranks up fine and will runs so smooth, but it's like once it gets good and warmed up it wants to spit and sputter and die.

And in 4WD, when I let off the clutch too fast and the waggy jerks really hard, it will shut off wether I give it gas or not.
