What can you guys tell me about the 4.8. Dependablity, mileage, and things like that. Thanks

Plenty dependable...will run for well over 100k with only normal maintenance. great power, as long as you aren't towing. Mileage should be around 18-19 mpg hwy.

gutless compared to the 5.3

Not true. I could outrun similar trucks with 5.3's when I had a work truck with a 4.8. But when there is any load in the bed, or pulling a trailer, the 5.3 shines.

no way!! i have had 2 truck with these motors in them and i would blow the door off 4.8 trucks on a regular basis. the 08 models are even worse. they added traction control. i am just say no way i would own one. i am not sure who you were racing but they either i did not know you were racing them or needed a tune up badly.

It was a contractor I was overseeing, and he knew we were racing. He kept talking smack about his truck being faster. His was a crew cab Z71 with the shorty bed, and mine was a 2wd extended cab long bed, so there may have been a little weight difference, but not much. He did have about 100k on his 5.3, and my 4.8 was pretty fresh...just past break-in. I smoked him, though. 3 or 4 truck lengths by 70 mph. He was really dumbfounded. I'm pretty sure gearing differences played a large part in it.

something was wrong then cuz i smoooooooooked a guy in a sigle cab dodge with a hemi one night and i know it was fast. i am just say in my experiance.

I just bought a two wheel drive with the 5.3 in it and ive raced four trucks in it and won everytime they where an 04 gmc with a 5.3, a 05 ford with the 5.4 triton, a older model chevy with a built 350, and an 07 chevy with a 4.8 and the 04 was the only one that could hang from dead stop to 100. The ford was the weakest i thought which really suprized me i thought it would spank me. Ha

I have an '01 GMC, reg cab, 2wd with a 4.8 and it's been great. Has around 140,000 on it and only reapair has been an a/c switch in the compressor; nothing to the motor (knock on wood). As said above, it is weaker feeling when pulling than the 5.3 but no noticibly big difference in acceleration. Gets 19MPG.
I'd buy another one in a heartbeat!
