I want a hand-held GPS, but know almost nothing about them. I would love to hear what you know about them and which ones you think would best serve a guy like me.

I would probably use it quite a bit.
I would want to have a dash mount and 12v adapter as well.
I would be interested in topo maps as well as roads and trails.
I want the ability to record trails.

What else can they do?
I have a garmin, and I think it does everything you are wanting to do.
I have heard good things about Garmin. Any particular model or models you would suggest I look at?

I don't think I need the latest and greatest, but I also don't want to buy something that is discontinued only to find that there is little or no support for it.
Garmin Colorado hands down
I wouldn't be surprised if the Colorado would cook breakfast for you
Im sure mine is out dated, Ive had it for about 3yrs now. I dont remember the model, but it is blue.

You have one of the etrex models. That's what I use. Ya they are kind of oldschool. But they still work pretty good unless you have a lot of tree coverage.
My dad swears by Garmin. He is on his 3rd model, and all 3 still work, he just keeps upgrading. They do have the best updates, but you have to pay for them.

All of the updates I have seen on Garmin's Website have been free. Maybe on the more expensive models I guess. I don't know. I love Garmin though, wouldn't have any other brand. Well unless tomtom decided to make a handheld. It would have to be awesome.

You could download that corned beef hash recipe and it'd be ready when you got up...
