I walked out to my dakota this morning to find this:
After looking through my service manual, it seems like it installs like the old Ford windows. A long piece of rope inside the seal lip with one person pushing outside while someone inside the truck pulls the rope around so the inner lip of the seal flips over the sheet metal and locks the window in place.
Just wanted to see if anyone else had done one of these and if my idea of what to expect is correct.
i haven't installed one on a dodge but an old ford and toyota. used string in the seal on both of them. its not all that hard. might try spraying the seal down good with some silicone lube before you start pulling on the string
X2 with redneck. Use a piece of cotton rope about 1/8" to 3/16" diameter, let the 2 ends meet in the middle of the bottom, hold the window to the body snug but not tight, start at the bottom by pulling one end of the rope to start the rubber lip over the flange, work it around until the glass is in place, and bump the rubber seal from the outside with your hand to make sure it seats well. I had to come back and add a small bead of sealer inside the outer lip of the seal along the top and sides to one I installed in my 86 Dodge.
Some mouldings have a separation or even a separate strip that you release to allow the moulding to flex enough to install the glass. Look for a seam on the outside by picking at it with a screwdriver or something. Try to find a lip. If you do, pry it up and go from there.
You may want to cover the broken glass with duct tape to keep it together while you remove it. It may fall apart as you do it though.
Then again, make sure there is a similar piece of rubber on the inside. I have seen some that glue in with a piece attached to the glass to finish off the outside.
X2 on the duct tape, or Duck Tape, as it has become to be called. Looking at the pick at the top, I cannot tell if there is a clincher strip on that glass weatherstrip or not. You can see if the center part is tucked in like Res said by taking a screwdriver and pick at it a little.

Just wonderin.. How'd that happen?
No clue. Was fine on Saturday morning, the last time I drove it. I got in my truck this morning, put it in reverse to go to work, looked in the rear view mirror and saw the driver's side rear window was shattered. No rocks laying on my tonneau cover or anything. It's almost as if it just busted on its own.
maybe a reaction between cold and hot?
No clue. My windows have been tinted for at least 9 years now. I have owned this truck since it had 1 mile on it. It has been parked in that same spot in the carport everyday for the past 5 years. No clue what happened. The window tint is the only thing holding it in place right now. I am going to tape it up tomorrow until I have a chance to figure out what my next move is.
Replacement window found at pull a part in Jackson! $30 later and hopefully some free time soon and my window will be replaced.
