Couldn't I just put the current ring gear (shims and bearings too) on the Detroit I got and not have to set up the gears? I'm talking about my turdy five. Swapping the carrier for the Detroit and not touching the pinion.

you'll still have to redo the backlash and run a pattern on it. the carriers aren't all machined to the exact same dimensions. you won't have to mess with the pinion depth or preload though.

It happens sometimes but don't count on it. definitely try it, that's what I do.
